How to Fix Unwanted Lines on Copies and Scans

October 28, 2024 | Wendy Sue Hawkins

Are you experiencing lines appearing on your scanned or copied documents when using the document feeder on your device? You're not alone, and this can happen to any device from time to time.  This issue is most commonly caused by dust, whiteout, or pen marks on the slit glass that are picked up off of the original document when it’s being scanned. The slit glass is a small strip of glass, about 1 inch in width, adjacent to the larger platen glass under the document feeder or platen cover on top of your device.

When you run an original document through the document feeder, the slit glass captures the image as the document is passed over it by the feeder before sending the image to the drum to create the print out.  When these residual buildup are copied repeatedly and mark up the glass, they can appear as added lines on your final documents when they print out.

To clean it, simply lift the document feeder and locate this small rectangular glass (around 1 inch by 12 inches). Use a soft cloth, ideally a microfiber towel that won't scratch the glass, with a small amount of alcohol or glass cleaner, and gently wipe it clean. It’s also a good idea to regularly clean both the slit glass and large platen glass to prevent this buildup in the first place. This ensures that all your copies and scans remain crisp and clear!

In most cases, that should be enough to take care of those pesky lines.  But, as always, if you have trouble with these steps or don't feel comfortable taking them on, our technicians are standing by and ready  to assist.  Additionally, as part of every service call, our team will clean both the slit glass and the platen glass as part of their procedural steps to ensure it's regularly taken care of.  Just one of the many ways our service team goes above and beyond on every call.
